0 Predator (1987)

Saturday, June 25, 2011 Labels: , , , , , ,

Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his elite commando team lead an assault into the jungle to rescue a CIA hostage from a gureilla group who shot down his helicopter. Dutch and his team demolish the militants but discover no hostages other than a single, terrified girl (Anna). Dutch realises they have been set up and, with no choice, heads to the chopper pick-up point. However, unbeknownest to Dutch, they are being tracked by a savage, invisible alien, the Predator.

It follows the group and when Anna tries to escape the group and Hawkins follows, it kills him leaving Anna alive-she had no weapon, no sport. The group find (part of) Hawkins and continue towards the chopper. Anna only says that, 'the jungle came alive and took him.' but soon Blain is killed and Mac gets a glimpse of the Predator and, joined by the others, fires wildly into the jungle. They wound the Predator but he escapes and the group set up camp for the night. In the night, Mac is startled when something trips a trap they set up. He dives on the intruder only to discover he has killed a boar. The group settle down but discover that Blain's body has vanished without a trace. Shaken, the group tries to sleep.

The next day, the group set up a large amount of traps and lie in wait for the Predator. He gets caught in a trap but manages to escape sending a log flying into Poncho, severly wounding him. Mac sprints off after the Predator, yelling hysterically and is followed by Dillon. The pair track it down but are ambushed and are slaughtered.

The survivors, Dutch, Poncho, Billy and Anna, try to escape but are held back by Poncho. They reach a log going across a valley and Billy stops, throwing down his weapon to take the Predator one-on-one. He is slaughtered but gives the group more time. the group collapses and the Predator appears in a tree above them. It shoots Poncho and Dutch (who survives), Anna reaches for a gun but Dutch kicks it from her hand and screams: get to the chopper! Dutch flees from the Predator and slides into a river, it turns out that the Predator's infrared sensors are easily fooled by the mud covering Dutch. He prepares some self-made weapons and traps, covers himself in mud and makes the Predator chase him.

Dutch yells out a challenge to the Predator and the pair engage in ferocious hand-to-hand combat, Dutch lures his opponent to the site of the traps, where the Predator manages to discover one, circles around it, but is crushed by the second one in form of a huge tree stem. Dutch wants to finish him off by crushing hsi head with a huge rock, but sees him bleeding, dying and thinks better of it. Instead he ask, half-rhetorically, "What the hell are you?". The Predator, in what looks like a translation attempt, opens his alien forearm-attached PDA, and engages its self-destruct mechanism, laughing maniacally.

Dutch runs away and nearly doesn't escape the nuclear mini-explosion, which seems to entail some sort of electro-magnetic pulse, seen affecting the rescue helicopter carrying Anna. Dutch walks out from the smoking, devastated jungle area, where the helicopter picks him up. Roll credits.

0 Adventures in Babysitting (1987)

Labels: , , , , ,
Chris Parker is a seventeen year old girl who is waiting for the arrival of her boyfriend, Mike Toddwell, when he arrives, he devastates her by canceling their plans to go to a French Restaurant in downtown Chicago in lieu of his sister becoming ill. Brokenhearted, she has her best friend Brenda come over for a visit, and while she is over, the Andersons call asking if Chris can babysit their daughter Sara. Seeing no other plans for the evening, Chris agrees.

When she arrives, she discovers eight year old Sara and her fifteen year old brother Brad in an argument. Sara had taken his Clearasil and used it to paint another picture of her Marvel hero Thor, prompting Brad to call him a homo and upset her. She manages to blackmail him by telling him in front of Chris (without his knowing) that she would tell Chris about all of his love poems to her. Ashamed of his crush, he admits defeat and apologizes. After the Andersons leave for the evening, Brad is visited by his best friend Daryl, whose house he was supposed to be staying over that night, Brad cancels and returns to the living room where he shuts the blinds out from the "stray dog" as he describes him to Chris. Chris gets a call from a frantic Brenda, who had successfully run away from home, but unsuccessfully stranded herself at the bus station downtown. Without the money to pay for a cab ride, Brenda's fear prompts Chris to decide to drive into town. Sara and Brad won't let her leave them home alone, and Daryl's eavesdropping forces her to take him along as well.

In the car, Chris tells Sara a scary story about a man with a hook who kills a babysitter and her children, and when a car tire blowout stands them on the expressway without a spare, she realizes that she forgot her purse at the Anderson's. A tow truck pulls over and "Handsome" John Pruitt offers them a hand, or a hook as much to the surprise and fear to the children. Offering to pay for the tire repair, Pruitt is distracted by a call and he diverts to his home where his wife is cheating on him. In a resulting shootout, Chris and the others get out of the truck and into a Cadillac, which is being stolen. The thief, Joe Gipp promises to take them to safety after he drops off the car at a chop shop. However the leaders of the gang, Greydon and Bleak detain them up in the office for a meeting they were involved in. Daryl boosts a Playboy magazine to replace his dad's which was thrown out of the car window earlier by Brad. They then make a tense escape crossing the girders in the warehouse ceiling, escaping outside. The thieves find the Playboy missing, and as it contains incriminating evidence that can be used against them, they give chase.

The kids are chased into a Blues club where they are not allowed off the stage until they reveal their predicament in song, much to the cheers and applause from the audience. When they are allowed to leave, they are reminded of their mission and predicament when Darryl attempts to pick up a prostitute on the street who turns out to be seventeen that ran away from home. Meanwhile Brenda is not having a very good time at the bus station. Having her glasses stolen while resting leaves her practically blind, she mistakes a sewer rat for a kitten and is laughed at by pest exterminators when she attempts to defend it, she encounters a hot dog vendor who will not accept her small check as payment stating "You slip me the cash, and I'll slip you the wiener." but when she states "I don't have any cash!" he proclaims "Then I don't have a wiener!" Another chase from the thieves prompts them to board a monorail train where a pair of conflicting gang members move in to kill each other. Chris intervenes to hold off the fight until they exit the train, and Brad stands up when she is insulted. Brad gets a knife thrown into his shoe, and Chris wields it against them, quoting her famous line: "Don't fuck with the babysitter." when they back off, the four of them leave the train, and rush Brad to the hospital. After a scare where they think Brad has died, they run into Pruitt again who tells them that they will need to pay $50 for the tire, as he had to pay for the windshield damage from the gunfight earlier.

They arrive shortly after at a fraternity house which is having a Friday night party. Chris meets a new love interest in Dan Lynch who manages to get together $45 toward the car's tire payment. Darryl gets into trouble with a jock whose lonely girlfriend attempts to have sex with him, and Dan takes them to Dawson's garage. Leaving, and expected never to be seen again as he did not give Chris an address to get ahold of him to pay him back. Upon entering the garage, they meet Dawson, whose long blond hair and physically fit appearance causes Sara to think he is the alter ego of Thor. Dawson, offended by the $5 shortage refuses to relinquish the car, but Sara's selflessness in giving him her plastic Thor helmet prompts him to have a change in heart, he gives the car and her helmet to the kids and lets them go.

Enroute to the bus station, Chris spots the restaurant that Mike was supposed to take her to that night, and Darryl points out Mike's car in the parking lot. They go in to find that Mike is dating and flirting with the sleazy Sesame Plexer, and it is revealed that Mike was only dating Chris in interest of having sex with her. Brad stands up for Chris, but won't sink to his level. Darryl admits "I will" and kicks Mike into a desert cart. Meanwhile, Sara slipped out of the restaurant to visit a toy store she had seen coming down the street, and is approached by Bleak who spots the Playboy in her backpack. They chase her down to the building that her parents are having their party in and find through chocolate finger smudges on the elevator buttons which floors to check. Graydon exits in the renovated top floor of the building, and discovers Sara climbing out the window on a rope. Chris, Darryl and Brad hot on their trail choose the wrong floor and accidentally crash the Anderson's office party. After a brief encounter with Bleak, both he and Chris notice Sara walking along the glass window ledge outside, Chris causes Bleak to trip while she and Brad and Darryl go upstairs and discover Sara outside the window. After pulling her up to safety, Joe arrives and explains they were after the Playboy the whole time. They decide to leave Graydon outside and let him "Sweat a little while" Joe shows his resignation from the car thieves by punching out Bleak and they depart the building.

Brenda discovers her glasses and steals them back, only to be chased from the bus station by all the encounters she had come across. Being chased by the homeless, she runs into the exterminators, past the hot dog vendor and past the phone booth which is a homeless man's house. After she gets outside, she is picked up by Chris and the others and she proclaims "What took you guys so long?!" on the way home, the kids pass the Andersons in their trip home, they travel at 80mph to get home. Chris sends the kids upstairs and Brenda home before cleaning up the messes that had been made earlier in the day. Coming to settle down just as the Andersons appear in the doorway, not suspecting a thing. Chris goes upstairs to say good night and announces her plans to retire from Babysitting. They each admit to each other and thank themselves for "What was probably the greatest night of their lives... so far"

As Chris leaves, Dan makes a surprising appearance to return Sara's skate which she left in his jeep, as well as admit to Chris that he is interested in her. Sara shouts "Kiss him!" from the bedroom window, and they comply happily. Brad, who had come to realize that while they aren't boyfriend/girlfriend he and Chris can still have a good friendship, and accepts that Dan is better for her than he is. He closes the blinds to give the two some privacy, and the credits roll.

0 Lethal Weapon (1987)

Labels: , , , ,

The story begins on the night of December 14, 1987 with the apparent suicide of Amanda Hunsaker, who jumped from an apartment balcony after a cocaine session, (Jackie Swanson), the daughter of Michael Hunsaker (Tom Atkins), an old friend and former army buddy of LAPD Detective Sergeant Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover). A veteran cop of 20 years, Roger Murtaugh gets stuck with a new partner on his 50th birthday. That partner is 37-year-old Detective-Sergeant Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson), whose wife was killed in a car accident three years earlier. As a result, Riggs is a suicidal, borderline alcoholic, who has become so reckless and violent that he is considered a "lethal weapon". Sergeant Murtaugh first believes that his new partner is "trying to draw a psycho pension" and is horrified to learn that he genuinely is "crazy." However, he is soon indebted to his new partner for saving his life.

While investigating Amanda Hunsacker's death, the two uncover a heroin-smuggling operation run by Vietnam War special forces troops, known as 'Shadow Company' (see Air America). The scheme is masterminded by a ruthless retired General, Peter McAllister (Mitchell Ryan) - the former commander of Shadow Company - and his chief enforcer, Mr. Joshua (Gary Busey). Murtaugh and Riggs - also Vietnam War veterans - discover that Michael Hunsacker was laundering the profits through his bank. McAllister had ordered the murder of his daughter to keep his laundryman under control. As Riggs and Murtaugh confront Michael Hunsacker, Mr. Joshua makes a surprise appearance in a helicopter and shoots him in the back with a sniper rifle.

As Riggs and Murtaugh discover more about Shadow Company's network, the increasingly violent members of Shadow Company make an attempt to kill Riggs, then kidnapping Murtaugh's daughter (Rianne) after Riggs and Murtaugh discover her boyfriend was killed by Shadow Company. Despite their best attempt to free Rianne by using Riggs presumed dead status to their advantage, the three are captured. Using Rianne, Joshua pressures Murtaugh to reveal which of their drug shipments have been compromised. Riggs, though initially captured by McAllister and brutally tortured with electric shocks, frees himself and then liberates both Murtaugh and Rianne. The pair then declare war on Shadow Company, gunning down most of its members. McAllister is caught in a car accident by Murtaugh and is blown up by a live hand grenade (along with his heroin shipment). Both Riggs and Murtaugh shoot Mr. Joshua after Riggs beats him with a Triangle Choke in an unarmed combat fight on Murtaugh's front lawn.

Murtaugh and Riggs are now solid friends, and Riggs spends Christmas Day at the Murtaugh home with Roger's family; Riggs brings his dog Sam to be a friend to the Murtaugh family cat, Burbank. Riggs also gives Murtaugh a symbolic gift, the unfired hollow point bullet which he had been saving to commit suicide.

0 Hellraiser (1987)

Labels: , ,

Somewhere in North Africa, Frank Cotton (Sean Chapman) purchases an antique puzzle box from a dealer. Back at his house in England, Frank solves the puzzle box and hooked chains immediately fly out of the box and tear into his flesh. Demons called Cenobites from another realm appear to inspect Frank's remains. Their leader, Pinhead (Doug Bradley), picks up the box and twists it back into its original state, and the room appears empty as if nothing ever happened.

Frank's brother Larry Cotton (Andrew Robinson) soon moves into Frank's abandoned house with his second wife, Julia Cotton (Clare Higgins), who previously had a secret affair with Frank. They assume that Frank is off on one of his notorious adventures. Larry's teenage daughter Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence) chooses not to live with her step-mother and moves into her own place. After cutting his hand on a nail (while moving a mattress), Larry goes upstairs to the room where Julia is, and where Frank was killed and his blood falls on the floor. It mysteriously disappears through the floorboards as they leave the attic, and Frank's soul uses this blood as nourishment to partially regenerate his body. Later, Frank (Oliver Smith) convinces Julia to help restore him to his full physical form. Julia succumbs to Frank's entreaties and agrees to help him by seducing men and luring them up to the empty attic where Frank hides. After having Julia incapacitate them, Frank is able to move in and drain them of their blood, which allows him to further regenerate his body. Frank tells Julia about the puzzle box and explains that by reclaiming his body he has broken his deal with the Cenobites. He wants to fully restore himself and then run off with Julia before the Cenobites can track him down.

Kirsty eventually catches Julia bringing a strange man home and sneaks into the house to investigate. In the attic Julia beats the man, allowing Frank to feast on his body. Kirsty approaches the attic unaware of what's happening within. Suddenly, the bloody man stumbles out of the attic, soon followed by the skinless Frank who confronts Kirsty. Before Frank can grab her, Kirsty picks up the puzzle box as a weapon. When she realizes it holds value for Frank, she throws it out the window and escapes from the house, picking up the box as she runs down the street. A disoriented Kirsty awakens in the hospital where she tells herself it all was a terrible dream, until the doctors hand her the puzzle box. Kirsty begins to play with the puzzle box and accidentally solves it. The walls of her hospital room open a dimensional door and Kirsty encounters the Cenobites. Pinhead tells Kirsty that she has summoned them, and therefore they must take her to their world of pain and suffering. She then begs them to spare her, offering to lead them to Frank in exchange for her freedom. Kirsty escapes the hospital and races to her father's home to warn him about Frank. Larry informs Kirsty that Frank has been taken care of, and Julia shows Kirsty a bloody body in the attic. The Cenobites reappear, demanding the man responsible for this death. Kirsty believes they want her father and she runs to warn him. However, she soon realizes that Frank has murdered her father and stolen his skin and worn it like a suit to fool Kirsty into believing that he was her father.

Frank comes after Kirsty, accidentally stabbing Julia in the process. Frank then drains Julia of her blood, further nourishing himself. Then he goes to the attic where Kirsty is hiding. Kirsty weeps and accuses Frank of murdering her father. Frank reveals to Kirsty that her father was already dead inside anyway. Having heard Frank's confession, the Cenobites appear. Frank tries to kill Kirsty for setting him up, but dozens of hooked chains grab him and tear him apart. Kirsty runs through the house, eager to escape, but the Cenobites want to take her as well. Kirsty finds the puzzle box clutched in the hands of Julia's corpse. One by one she banishes the Cenobites back to their realm by reversing the solution to the puzzle box.

Afterwards, Kirsty tries to burn the box in a fire outdoors, but the strange vagrant appears and picks it out of the flames. As the man is consumed by the flames he transforms into a winged, skeletal creature that flies away into the night. In the final scene, the box is shown in the hands of the merchant who originally sold it to Frank, asking another prospective customer, "What's your pleasure, sir?"
